The surface analysis laboratory ensures the characterization of processes and structures obtained through Surface Electrochemical Engineering Methods under different experimental conditions, by correlating the results obtained through ESCA, EIS, DRX and LAXRD analysis,metallographic microscopy, ellipsometry, SEM, AFM.


  • Microphysical characterization of surfaces and thin surfaces (XPS analysis, XPS Microscopy, „depth profiling”);
  • Electrochemical surface engineering experiments (treatments on plasma electrolysis, electrodeposition from ionic liquids) for the development of materials for extreme conditions use - pressure, temperature and high neutron fluxes;


  • The laboratory is designated as  Notified testing laboratory,  for SAXPS techniques (Small Area XPS), Microscopie XPS (fast Paralell imaging XPS) and „depth profiling”, according to Notification LI 02/2011 issued by the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN);

Experimental installations

  • Electron Spectrometer ESCALAB 250

Features and performances:

  1. Double-focusing full 180 degree hemispherical analyser, transfer lens and multichannel spectroscopic detector: analyser energy range: 0-5000eV
  2. XPS spectroscopy (ultimate energy resolution of ≤ 0.45eV) and parallel imaging (with a spacial resolution of ≤ 3µm); source defined XPS down to 120µm
  3. Monochromated X-ray source micro focused for XPS with variable spot size range  1mm to 120µm.
  • Electrochemical system PAR 2273

Features and performances:

  1. Potentiostat/Galvanostat PAR 2273, power range: 100nA¸2A, frequency range: 10 µHz ÷ 1 MHz
  2. Electrochemical cell with working electrode, reference electrode (calomel) and auxiliary electrode (graphite);
  3. PowerSuite software package including:
    • PowerCorr – for measurements and corrosion analysis;
    • PowerSine – for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy;
    • PowerCV for Cyclic Voltammetry (CV);
    • PowerStep – for Chronoamperometry and Chronopotentiometry;
    • PowerPulse for Analytical Electrochemistry.

  • Thermo-electrochemical treatments laboratory facility


    • Anodizing treatments: U=0÷250V; I=0÷50A
    • Cathodic treatments: U=0÷250V; I=0÷50A
