Applications of Nuclear Techniques

Objectives:
  • Development of irradiation techniques, methods and technologies for medical, food industry and agricultural applications;
  • Development of corrosion protection methods;
  • Application of nuclear techniques in: health, environment, industry, agriculture, dietary, research, civil protection studies, police;
  • Development of advanced materials for industrial use;
  • Analysis and image processing for industrial application;
  • Development of personnel training systems;
  • Development of information display and interactive communication integrated systems.
Research perspectives:
  • Irradiation techniques, methods and technologies for medical, food industry and agricultural applications:
    • Studies and tests regarding the use of cellulose triacetate films as routine dosimeters;
    • Characterization of plastic materials used for packing medical and alimentary products sterilized by gamma irradiation;
    • Studies regarding the use of  irradiation technologies for upgrading (sterilization) of city waste waters and mud;
    • Sterilization of materials used in oenology by means of gamma radiation;
    • Studies regarding gamma irradiation technologies for wine preservation;
    • Restoration of fine art using gamma radiation;
    • Studies regarding free radicals released during gamma irradiation of pharmaceutical products;
    • Hydro gel production, for medical application, by gamma irradiation of polymer solutions.

  • Corrosion protection methods (corrosion inhibitors problem, coatings):
    • Influence of specific groups from organic corrosion inhibitor molecules to their efficiency;
    • Carbon steel protection mechanism of amine type inhibitors from scale removing solutions;
    • Management of carbon steel parts corrosion during cleaning with chemical solutions containing different corrosion inhibitors;
    • Correlation of corrosion inhibitors efficiency with the length and structure of the radicals linked to the amine group;
    • Methods for selecting type and concentration of the corrosion inhibitors usable in scale removing solutions from carbon steel;
    • Action mechanism of inhibitors used in brass cleaning solutions.

  • Completion and ratification of the personnel training system;

  • Nuclear techniques for health study applications:
    • Ensuring the technical and scientific capacity for the utilization and implementation of the latest computing instruments – codes and data bases – dedicated to nuclear techniques applied in medicine;
    • Promoting research activities regarding radiation protection in medicine;
    • Possibility to provide consultancy and service for hospitals, clinics and health research centers.

  • Development of nuclear techniques for environment study applications;

  • Development of methods for advanced materials characterization, process characterization, manufacturing of special properties carbon structures:
    • Development of characterization methods for materials with special properties obtained by controlled surface structure alteration;
    • Development of an „intelligent manufacturing” system of carbon surface structures with special properties by electrochemical techniques.

  • Completion and qualification of the spent fuel bundles underwater inspection system using image analysis (acquisition) and processing;

  • Completion and qualification of the information display and interactive communication integrated system for the assessment of the impact of human activities on the environment;

  • Completion and qualification of dimensional measurement system used for technical quality control of the mechanical products by means of image acquisition/processing;

  • Monitor system using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for applications in nuclear medicine and nuclear facilities - completion and qualification;

  • Manufacturing techniques for high-hardness and corrosion resistant carbon films for industrial applications:
    • Assessment of test capacity for materials with carbon films at different corrosion types;
    • Comparative study regarding thin carbon films with special properties for industrial application.
Main results of research:
  • Studies, methods and publications:
    • Action mechanism of inhibitors used in brass cleaning solutions;
    • Selection methods for corrosion inhibitors usable in scale removing solutions from carbon steel;
    • Carbon steel protection mechanism of usable inhibitors in scale removing solutions;
    • Use of cathode protection (PC) in CNE with emphasis on equipment types which are best suited for this type of protection;
    • Main parameters of cathode protection and types of materials which can be used as soluble anodes;
    • Inhibitor types for the mitigation of pitting corrosion of stainless steel in acid environment;
    • Health and environment protection applications using MCNP code (particle transport simulation);
    • Promoting the research activities regarding radiation protection in medicine;
    • Application of advanced Monte Carlo codes in radiotherapy;
    • Characterization methods for advanced materials and their manufacturing processes;
    • Advance materials manufacturing through laser and plasma techniques;
    • Modeling of the manufacturing processes of advanced materials using the software package „MATERIAL STUDIU”;
    • Manufacturing techniques for high hardness and corrosion resistant carbon films for industrial applications.
