Analysis of the NPP operational events, ageing, environment qualification
and extension of the operation lifetime of the NPP

Objectives:
  • To maintain the reliability, safety, the availability and the capacity factor of the Cernavoda NPP over the entire designed lifetime;
  • To avoid the unexpected factors identifying the potential ageing issues before they occur and to foresee the monitoring ways as well as corrective actions;
  • Lifetime extension of the operational NPP in good conditions for safety and availability and with acceptable costs;
  • To assimilate the international operation experience; training of inter-disciplinary teams to perform examinations of significant events for the safety of the Cernavoda NPP.
Research perspectives:
  • Wear mechanisms of the significant/critical components and development of the diagnosis methods;
  • Development of the methodology for assessing the lifetime of NPP components;
  • Database of operational events of the Cernavoda NPP;
  • Diagnostic of the electric power installation malfunctions by using thermal spectral analysis;
  • Assessment of the components ageing effects on the nuclear safety in Cernavoda NPP;
  • Development of the technologies for the environmental qualification of NPP materials & equipment;
  • Extension of predictive maintenance methods for NPP and for systems monitoring & control;
  • Development of technologies to refurbish components worn-out by ageing.
Main results of research:
  • Data base for Cernavoda NPP operational events;
  • Development of the database including description of the NPP critical components;
  • Data base including the operational events recorded at the TRIGA reactor until 2002;
  • Demonstration of the necessity to re-design the critical components;
  • Development of advanced predictive inspection and maintenance techniques;
  • Analysis of international operational events feasible at Cernavoda Unit 1 with proposals for preventive corrective actions;
  • In-service inspection data analysis and assessment of the actual lifetime;
  • Analysis of data resulted from inspection activities performed during scheduled shutdown in October - November 1999;
  • Wear mechanisms impact on the prerequisite designed lifetime;
  • Development of the technologies for NPP materials & equipment environmental qualification.
