Relevance
of the project
Relevance
to the objectives of the 4th Program and to the specific objectives of the
direction of research
The project proposal New materials, from intermetallic compounds, used as
irradiation targets for gamma sources with iridium and cobalt, employed in
industry and medicine for PN II project IV Partenaires is framed in
research direction 7- Materials, processes and innovative products; 7.4.
Nuclear technologies; 7.4.6. The obtaining of new materials by and for
nuclear technologies.
The objectives
of the project are according to the general objectives of project 4
“ the enhancement of CDI system ability from Romania to
accumulate knowledge, results and experience a first grade in high
scientific and technological domains and to carry out and transfer it to the
economic social environment for the enhancement of its competitiveness”,
“The optimal concentration and exploitation of scientific and technologic
potential with high level available in Romania”, “the encouragement of
composition, development, integration and consolidation in the extended
domains of networks of research whose activity reach the excellence level,
accepted according to the international direction; Romania’ enhance capacity
to assure the performance partners in the collaboration within the
scientific and technical projects and in the international scientific
alliances” and “ the integration and consolidation of CD network institution
in the extended domains.
The project is
according to the specific objectives of project 4
“the enhancement’ assets of activities of CD units and institutions from
Romania, which assure the promotion, the development and the concentrating
of human and material resources of integrated network of specialized,
approved and acknowledged institutions and organisms, which will assure the
scientific and technical competencies and the subsidies demanded for the
advance of scientific or technologic domain and which should contain: CD
national institute, a profiled centre/department from universities,
laboratories for experiments and tests”.
The project is
according with the specific objectives of research-development complex
projects
because
it is realized by the scientific activities and great complexity
technological growing, which include fundamental applied research, with
competitive level and are deployed in common from a representative
consortium at national level for the scientific domain of peak technologies
driving the integration, the enhancement of quality and the level of
performance of CD activities deployed in the frame of consortium; the
development of associations for long time among institutions participant,
including this of public-private type; the equal development of activities
and of infrastructures of the members from 4 prestigious institutions, with
a great and rich experience in the research of materials, in the
multidisciplinary and complementary approach of the problems. By the
oriented effort in order to obtain and characterize the new classes of
compounds with applications in the nuclear domain, for the complex approach
of the correlations composition/structure/properties, and by the application
for obtaining specific technique with impact act on the materials properties
and implicit of the specific applications, the activities of the projects
are enclosed in the thematic areas S&T promoted according to the PC7
project, 4.2. Materials
The scope
of the project
is the establishment and the test of the necessary knowledge,
technologies and the methods of materials’ characterization for obtaining
targets from intermetallic compound with Co and Ir with Al. SCN Pitesti as
fabricant of iridium and cobalt gamma sources for industrial and medical
appliance has initiated this project proposal with the scope to change the
metallic targets from cobalt and iridium with targets from intermetallic
compounds of active metal with aluminium, for the improvement of the quality
of cobalt and iridium gamma sources, the decrease of irradiation time and
the material costs
Valorification
of results and potential beneficiaries.
The main beneficiary of the results obtained following the
research activity of the IRCOAL company is SCN Pitesti which shall produce
gamma irradiation sources of Ir and Co for the industry and medicine with
irradiation targets out of the inter-metallic compounds of CoAl and IrAl.
Dissemination
of results
The growth of excellence and scientific
visibility of the company shall be realized through:
- Dissemination of the scientific results
through communications and/or participations to techno-scientific national
and international meetings (, scientific articles, web page, presentation CD
etc);
- The publication of the scientific results
obtained during the achievement of the excellence project in magazines rated
ISI; J. Alloys and Compounds, J. of Materials Science, J. Nuclear Materials;
- The elaboration and heading of project proposals with new scientific
orientations within the national and international competitions on CD
programes of the type CEEX, SECURITATE, INVENT, NATO, EUREKA, FP7 etc;
- Forwarding patent proposals on the theme
approached within the excellence project; the development of the educational
support by editing university courses, the introduction in the university
curricula of the technologies for the obtaining of the intermetallic
compounds and of the irradiation technologies
Economic impact
For SCN Pitesti as manufacturer of gamma sources of Ir and Co used in
industry and medicine, the economic impact will be
substantial. This will lead to the abrupt shortening of the irradiation time
for the obtaining of pre-established activities. Thus, the time for the
functioning of the reactor may be used more efficient, there can be reduced
the dependence of the reactor stops and can be assured a better and faster
correlation with the beneficiary’s requirements. Practically, the
irradiation can be done in any of the reactor’s channel. There can be
conceived economic schemes for the use of the irradiation channels , such as
short irradiation in one of the central channels with high flux, followed
by saturation storage in one of the outer channels in order to ensure a
minimum amount of radioactive material for the rhythmically deliveries.
There can also be obtained an important reduction of material costs, Ir
being a precious material and Co a strategic material.
Social
impact.
It can
represent a course support for the master “Materials and nuclear
technologies” from Pitesti University; during the
development of the project there shall be employed young scientists; new
working places shall be created.
Environmental
impact.
The
working activities with closed sources are reputed by standards
specified in Law nr. 111/1996 and Law nr. 193/2003 regarding
the safe development of the nuclear activities, Government Decision nr.
1627/2007 regarding the approval of the organization and functioning rule of
the National Committee for The Nuclear Activities Control, so that the
impact on nature is zero.
