Radiation protection, environment protection and civil protection

Objectives:
  • Providing radiation and environment protection for its own nuclear facilities;
  • Sustaining an R&D program intended to increase proficiency in human and environment protection against radiation-associated risks.
Certification:
    Notification Laboratory for National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN).
Activities:
  •  Occupational radiation protection;
  •  Management of environmental releases;
  •  Environmental radioactivity monitoring;
  •  Computer codes development;
  •  Emergency planning and preparedness;
  •  Emergency radioactivity monitoring.
Experimental Facilities:
  • Portable devices for radiation survey (gamma, neutrons, contamination);
  • Portable gamma spectrometers for “in-situ” characterization of gamma radiation fields and gamma-emitting radionuclides identification and determination;
  • Low background alpha/beta radiometers for air, surfaces and various environmental samples contamination measurement;
  • Sampling preparation laboratory for environment radioactivity monitoring and radiochemical measurements;
  • Stationary high resolution gamma spectrometry analyzers with HpGe detectors for gamma - emitting radionuclides concentration measurement in environmental samples;
  • Liquid scintillation analyzer for beta-emitting radionuclides concentration measurements in liquid samples;
  • Spectrometric system for radiological characterization of radwaste containers.
Main Achievements:
  • Measurements, Analyses and Studies for environmental radioactivity pre-operational monitoring program at Cernavoda NPP, Unit 1;
  • Annual reports on environmental impact of SCN - FCN nuclear activities;
  • Radio-ecological studies for the characterization of agricultural ecosystems radioactive contamination;
  • Radio-ecological studies on aquatic ecosystems;
  • Development of radiation assessment methods for radiation protection purposes: Monte Carlo methods for efficiency calibration of spectrometric and dosimetry devices;
  • Adapted of Well Known Computer Codes;
  • Development of radionuclides environmental dispersion models. Derived emission limits for nuclear reactors for gaseous and liquid effluents;
  • Development of scientific, methodological and practical support for emergency planning and preparedness;
  • Methods and techniques for fast sampling of tritium from atmosphere, for concentration assessment. Sampling devices with cryogenic trap;
  • Testing of individual protection outfits designed for radioactive contaminated work posts.
