Results, foreseen benefits

      The major result is the elaboration of Procedures for a correct corrosion analysis and diagnosis of corrosive degradations, which should conduct to the identification of the occurrences causes for corrosive phenomena and of the solutions for their diminution/prevention.

      Achievement of the project proposed will also lead to the development of the material assets for the tendering organization, which could extend experimental aria with the final purpose: a deep knowledge of the corrosion degradation processes and mechanisms necessary in the identification of the solutions for prevention of degradation due to accelerated corrosion.

      Also, through the progress of the activity related to the completion of the proposed project, specialists shall be trained to perform the expertise works and technical assistance in the prevention of some corrosive degradation phenomena within a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Thus, the safe operation of the nuclear installations during expected lifetime will be achieved or exceeded, leading to the decrease of maintenance expenses for installations and to a rewarding activity.

      For example, in nuclear industry, shutdown of a nuclear unit only due to some corrosion degradations of the steam generator tubes, leads to damages of hundreds of millions of dollars during operation. Such degradations can occur in other structural components, if corrosion processes are not carefully followed and prevented.

      At the same time the risks of chemical and radiochemical contamination of the operating personnel, population and environment, some accidents and even loss of human lives shall be prevented.

      Final results

      In LADICON laboratory corrosion analysis and diagnosis of different corroded metallic components from nuclear installations perform in accordance with specific technical procedures and SR EN ISO CEI 17025: 2005 standard’s requirements.

      The technical procedures were brought up-to-date in accordance with applicable national and international standards and norms for:
  • gravimetric analysis of corroded coupons;
  • metallographic microscopy analysis of metallic coupons corroded in nuclear installations;
  • determination of metallic material‘s corrosion behavior by electrochemical methods (corrosion potential monitoring, linear polarization and cyclic polarization).
      Since 2008 the LADICON laboratory is notified by CNCAN Bucharest as Laboratory of experiments in nuclear field according with Notification No. LI - 04 – 2008.

      Since 2009 LADICON is approved by RENAR Bucharest as laboratory for analysis and diagnosis of corroded metallic components from nuclear installations in accordance with SR EN ISO CEI 17025: 2005 standard’s requirements as per Accreditation Certificate No. LI 755.

      Experimental basis of laboratory was completed by acquisition of a corrosion loop for high temperatures and pressures equipped with electrochemical system.

      Researchers from LADICON participate permanently to National and International Conferences with scientific papers about characterization of corrosion behavior of most important alloys used in nuclear plants.
