Laboratory for characterization of spent nuclear fuel and high/medium level radioactive waste with the purpose of their final disposal (LABORAD)
Project proposed in the framework of the program “Excellence Research” of the Ministry of Education and Research,
Modulus IV 2006-2008
The development of nuclear energy and nuclear research activities and – recently – the decomissioning of nuclear facilities have lead to production of nuclear waste, varying as type and level of activity. During the sorting, treating, conditioning and disposal of radioactive waste, non-destructive and destructive examination techniques are required.
The National Agency for Radioactive Waste (ANDRAD) has elaborated a national strategy concerning the management of radioactive waste and, also, a set of laws concerning the disposal of radioactive waste. LABORAD will practically implement the requests of this strategy, using the experience of previous scientific cooperation between ANDRAD and the team of LABORAD.
LABORAD will be able to characterize the spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste from nuclear power plants (NPPs) and research reactors, from industry, medicine and R&D experiments, before their final disposal.
