Measurement methods
The Romanian standard SR ISO 11932: “Activity measurements of solid materials considered for recycling, reuse, or disposal as non-radioactive waste” contains basic guidance and methods for measurement of materials to be released for recycling, reuse or disposal as non-radioactive waste arising from the operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities in order to show compliance with the established criteria for unrestricted release.
According to the related national regulations, the radioactivity measurements concerning the free release of solid materials from nuclear activities must include:
- Surface contamination measurements
- Specific activity measurements
- Dose rate measurements
- Total activity evaluation
The CROWN Laboratory’s technical procedures include as follows:
- Radioactive contamination determination by direct and indirect methods
- Determination of activity concentration or total activity by gamma ray spectrometry
- Ambient equivalent dose rate H*(10) determination by direct measurement
Quality control for each method is performed by scheduled measurements of test radioactive sources and of environmental background, thus being derived the critical parameters for the measurement equipment.
Traceability
- The measurements performed by the laboratory are traceable to the International System of Measurement Units. The standards are used in accordance with the Etaloanele se folosesc numai in conformitate cu schema de transmirere a unitatii de masura.
- The entire hardware used for measurements are metrologically calibrated by the SCN Metrology Lab BRML authorized as per SR EN ISO/CEI 17025/2005.
- The laboratory holds certified reference materials which are used to perform internal check of measurement method’s performances.
- The laboratory participates systematically in intercomparisons and proficiency tests organized by IAEA and other national or international organizations.
Testing/measurement reports
The testing laboratory results are reported in a clear, precise and unambiguous manner together with any other relevant information in a reporting form. This report contains the entire information required by the document: “Guide for implementation of SR EN ISO/CEI 17025 in testing laboratory accreditation”
The testing reports are issued in two copies, one for the beneficiary and the other for the laboratory archive.
